When a Kuna baby girl is born she is soon given three piercings. The septum of her nose and each ear receive piercing in recognition of her eventual womanhood. Through her childhood and into her adolescence she may wear simple jewelry. At the time of her first menstrual cycle she is given golden rings for her piercings to signify her womanhood. This mola's design represents the nose and nostrils a symbol of womanhood.
